Thanks very much for your quick response!

After enabling that notes.ini parameter, the client startup seems to get a little farther along, but crashes nonetheless.

I was surprised at how little had been written into the notes.ini file when I went to add the parameter (I have placed the entire contents below).

Now the splash screen disappears and the client looks like it is going to start (all I can see is the "Open" button), but then NSD rears its ugly head again.

I am even asked by XP to "unblock" the Lotus Notes client (which I do).

Unfortunately, this client continues to refuse to play nice!
